ST-650 Twin Steiger Power

Steiger Panther Twin ST650 was built in 1977. It was purely a test
model for Steiger. The model featured two 3406 Caterpillar engines putting
out 650 hp. This big tractor triggered the Versatile Corporation to build
the 8 wheel drive Big Roy prototype. Since the early 1980's  no one has heard of the
Twin Panther. The tractor was tested for a short time and appears to have
been taken apart and no records have survived. In 1980 Steiger had a brief
press release stating: "Currently a prototype, this giant and others like
it may be a common sight in big-farm country in the next decade. Steiger's
Panther Twin ST650 is powered by two 3406 Caterpillar engines; no
production schedule has been established yet." Even while the ST650 was
Steiger also had been working on an even larger triple engine model earlier on the Series II Panther. Neither model was ever a full production tractor and the 525 hp Tiger IV was phased out in the late 1980's because the demand for big horsepower never materialized. Most farmers were happy with 300-400 hp 4wds on the market.
